Telangana Girl Shreeya Receives Rs. 2.7 Crore Scholarship

Hyderabad: Shreeya Lakkapragada, 18-year-old student from Hyderabad, Telangana has been awarded a full scholarship worth Rs. 2.7 crores to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at Wellesley College in the United States of America. Established in the year 1870, Wellesley College is located in Massachusetts, United States and is currently ranked #5 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the US.

 

Notable alumni of Wellesley College include Hillary Clinton, the first female nominee for President of the United States,Madeleine Albright, the first woman U.S. Secretary of State, recipients of the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Academy Awards, Emmy Awards and noted academics, journalists, politicians, diplomats, activists, business leaders and filmmakers.

 

At Wellesley, Shreeya will study Computer Science and Psychology. The 2.7 crore scholarship will cover Shreeya’s entire tuition and living expenses for all four years at Wellesley – tuition, room and board, books and supplies, health insurance, travel expenses, personal expenses, etc.

 

At age 16, Shreeya was identified and groomed by Dexterity Global, a national organization powering the next generation of leaders through educational opportunities and training. Shreeya received rigorous training under Dexterity Global’s leadership development and career development programs. Earlier this month, Dexterity Global’s Founder and CEO and noted social entrepreneur Sharad Sagar announced that between 2008 and 2022 students from the organization’s career development program called “Dexterity to College” have now received more than 100 crores in scholarships from top colleges globally.

In the acceptance letter sent to Shreeya, Joy St. John, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Wellesley College writes, “Congratulations! Based on your outstanding academic record and contributions to your school and community, the Office of Admission is delighted to offer you admission to the Wellesley College Class of 2026. Wellesley’s applicant pool was highly competitive this year, and your acceptance is a testament to your hard work and compelling personal qualities.”

 

Shreeya’s Statement

 

On receiving the prestigious scholarship, Shreeya said, “I had never imagined that one day I will study at a top-ranked institution like Wellesley College in the US on a full scholarship. This is truly incredible! My life changed when I came in contact with Dexterity Global, an organization that has given me and other young people like me so much. This journey would have never been possible without the training and support I received at Dexterity as a Dexterity to College fellow over the last two years. The training built me inside out – to face challenges and get better every day. And, to be honest, this is not just my journey. I have met so many amazing people at Dexterity who come from different socio-economic backgrounds. At Dexterity, it does not matter whether you are rich or poor, live in big cities or remote villages. At Dexterity, we are trained to use our education to contribute to public service and nation building. I want to use my world-class education at Wellesley to solve present-day problems. We need more women role models in Sciences and I hope I can be one. I am forever grateful to Dexterity and my mentor Sharad Sagar Sir.”

Only last week, the organization made headlines when Prem Kumar, the first Mahadalit student from India, was selected to study at a top US college on a full scholarship of Rs. 2.5 crore. Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in the Government of India publicly appreciated the organization’s work. The Minister tweeted, “Appreciate the efforts of social entrepreneurs like Sharad Sagar in connecting youth with educational opportunities, especially those from the disadvantaged groups. His organisation Dexterity Global is fulfilling educational aspirations and has empowered 7 lakh+ students.
